What do German Guides do?
In the Federal Republic of Germany, four Scout and Guide Associations belong either to the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) or to the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM).
Together with Guides and Scouts from the Association of Guides and Scouts (Bund der Pfadfinderinnen und Pfadfinder, BdP) and the Association of Christian Guides and Scouts (Verband Christlicher Pfadfinderinnen und Pfadfinder, VCP), the St. George Girl Guides (Pfadfinderinnen St. Georg, PSG) make up the Ring of German Scouting Associations (Ring Deutscher Pfadfinderinnenverbände, RDP). The office of the RDP is located in Berlin.
2007
In 2007 Guides and Scouts all across Germany are celebrating the 100th birthday of the Scouting movement. The celebrations begin with Thinking Day on February 22, 2007, and the climax will be marked by a camp in the garden of the Federal President and a Scouting Congress which will take place at the same time. Central themes of this congress are commitment to peace, justice and education. The Jubilee Year will conclude with the Peace Light of Bethlehem celebration.
Activities of the St. George Girl Guides (PSG)
Caramba 2003
The summer programme for all Guides of thirteen or older was called Caramba. For ten days the girls experience full and self-organised summer of Guiding. In addition to many opportunities to experiement with their own abilities, the girls worked with the topics of fair trade and developmental politics. This involved, for instance, testing how food can be cooked on a solar-powered stove. A particular high point of the event was a two day long hike, which was carried out on foot, by bicycle or by canoe.
Motra 2004
A group of Rangers met together for one weekend to address topics such as the motivation of small groups, what it is that interests participants in the PSG, and what strengthens the feeling of belonging and identity within the association.
In the course of the weekend programme, a variety of techniques, both traditional and modern, were tested. Included among other offerings were WenDO, photography, rhetoric, wood working, meteorology and improvisation theatre.
On Saturday afternoon the topic for discussion was the association itself. Why do I belong to the PSG? What does the PSG mean to me? What interests me in the PSG? These three questions were discussed in small groups and the results then brought to expression in a creative fashion. Altogether 33 different artworks were created, which were presented that evening at a vernissage followed by a party.
On Sunday morning the participants’ feeling of belonging was strengthened by a sponsored run. 11 groups took part in the discipline of synchronized running, and together earned 2127.00 €, which was donated to three non-profit organisations, two organised by WAGGGS and the other by another association.
Weltjugendtag 2005
From August 16-20, 2005 young people gathered in Cologne for the 20th World Youth Day. Approximately 800 000 young people between the ages of 16 and 30 travelled from all over the world to the cathedral city to take part in this event.
The PSG together with the St. George Scouting Association of Germany (DPSG) and the Catholic Aid Organisation, Missio, set up a camp on the Rhine Meadows in Duesseldorf. Guides and Scouts from around the world met under the motto “scout mission – faith in deed”. Topics of discussion included world Church, integral development for all people, and the values and morals of the Church. In addition, a central topic was the problem presented by HIV/Aids. This theme was addressed with respect to the affected persons and the way that Guides and Scouts worldwide are involved in the fight against Aids.
PSG Press Award
The PSG is on the look-out for the best Guiding photos! The best PSG press coverage! Do something good and talk about it! This is a call to all Guides in the PSG to take pictures of their activities, to write articles and to get them published. The materials will be collected by the Association and made public.
Once a year a winner will be chosen from the entries and publicly honoured.
